Meet Hek (Hektor, born 13 December 2014), and Astro (born 2002), BC, Canada
This is what their owner Paula says about her Appenzellers: "Our first Appenzeller, Astro, came to us in 2002; a black tri-colour male from Canada. We learned a lot from this boy as he was a very different challenge compared to our biddable Bernese Mountain Dog. The Appenzeller is NOT a smaller version of the BMD; far from it, our Appenzeller puppy was much more demanding of our time and in need of a job, constantly! This crazy smart little man was on a mission to be at the top of his class, whether it be obedience, agility or whatever he was presented. Approaching 13 years of age, Astro was slowing down and we were presented with the prospect of obtaining an Appenzeller puppy, bred in Germany. Now retired, I felt confident that I could handle a new puppy. Enter Havana Hektor! One of 12 puppies in his litter whelped in the US, it was love at first sight with this beautiful brown boy. The Havana Brown Appenzeller is a brown tri-colour (a dilute) with lighter eyes. With beautiful conformation, he has excelled in the show ring as a puppy and a young adult, with two BIS Rare Breed wins in International Shows and a Group 2 win at a recent AKC Open Show. A versatile breed, Hektor loves to play agility, Rally Obedience and herding. He's a loving and gentle soul and a wonderful addition to our family" |
Meet Gemma (born 13 December 2014) and Sophie (born 10 November 2015), AB, Canada
Gemma was characterized by her breeder as the most independent and rambunctious puppy and, boy, that was true! Gemma has grown up into an intelligent and energetic dog. She likes long hikes in the mountains, plowing snow with her nose and fishing for rocks in streams. She has been a fearless explorer of outdoors and was not scared of a grizzly bear she spotted once. At the same time Gemma is a devoted and gentle companion dog. She loves sleeping next to her humans on a couch and lets two resident cats rub their heads on her chin. Another milestone a year later saw us getting another Appenzeller puppy. Life is changed with two dogs, but we would not have it any other way! Sophie is quite the character. We were told she was the shy, reserved one from the litter – we found out that in fact she is the curious, loud, energetic little Tasmanian Devil. Gemma and the cats were not sure what to make of it, but have learned over the last 2 years or so to respect one another |
